Julie Vickers, Founder and Managing Partner of HomePartners, recently participated as a member of the interdisciplinary panel of experts for the University of Utah College of Nursing - Geratric Care Manager Competency Survey Project. This project is funded by the Health Services Resources Administration and has been approved by the University of Utah Institutional Review Board.

The purpose of this research study is to determine the competencies needed by the entry level geriatric care manager (GCM) including competencies relevant to all GCMs and those specific to nursing. The study was conducted as there is currently no published consensus on the competencies required for geriatric care management. Based on these competencies, the University of Utah College of Nursing plans to develop curriculum for basic interdisciplinary geriatric care management, and additional coursework that builds on these core competencies for registered nurses. Preliminary findings were presented at the Gerontological Society of America Conference on November 24, 2008. Determination of these competencies and developing curriculum and programs could eventually have a positive impact on the care of older adults and their families.
